SEATTLE-Competing in their first January meet of the indoor season, Concordia registered five NAIA automatic qualifying marks and added four provisional marks at the University of Washington Indoor Invitational on Saturday.
"I think we are way ahead of schedule compared to our previous years," Concordia head coach Randy Dalzell said. "We had a number of people able to compete at a high level today. Hopefully we can continue to add to our qualifiers next week as we add our men's distance group and a few more field events."
Linsie Michels scored a pair of auto marks with a 5:02.72 in the open mile, well under the 5:12.25 standard for automatic entry into the national meet, as well as running a leg of the women's distance medley squad. Along with Michels, Sabrina Hoffman, Lauran Moran and Andria Scheese combined to cross the line in 12:36.48 to set a school record and gain the automatic qualifier.
Also competing in the mile, Scheese scores a provisional time with a 5:13.98 with under two seconds to spare.
Moran also nearly duplicated the double with a quality time in the 3,000-meter run. Moran finished the open 3,000 in 10:49.59 while fellow Cavalier distance runner Samantha Robert crossed in 10:47.02, both just shy of the provisional standard of 10:40.50.
In the field events, Katherine Tripp opened her indoor season with a meet-best toss of 45-11 3/4 to easily eclipse the 41-8 auto barrier, while Lakeesha Cadogan leaped 17-5 1/4 to hit the provisional mark dead on in the long jump.
On the men's side, DeAndre Burton set a school record in the triple jump, gaining entrance into the national championships with a 47-5 bound, nearly a foot farther than the NAIA automatic standard.
Leon Carl led a trio of qualifiers in the shot put with a 50-6 fling to also post a mark identical to the qualifying standard. Eric Whalen has to settle for a provisional mark after coming within a half of an inch of the automatic standard after unleashing a 50-5 1/2. With a 49-1 throw, Jesse Staub also gained a provisional mark.
Concordia returns to action on Jan. 24 when it competes at Boise State at the Orange and Blue Invitational.
