Steady defense lifts EOU over Concordia

LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon University Mountaineer men (12-5, 5-4 CCC) picked up an important win against the Cavaliers of Concordia University (7-12, 2-8 CCC) on Saturday. The Mounties shot well from the field and protected the three-point line as they defeated the Cavaliers 84-69.

Eastern got out to an early 21-11 lead and would then trade baskets for the rest of the half, leading at intermission 38-30. A pair of three pointers from EOU pushed their lead to fifteen points early in the second half and the team never looked back. The Mounties did a phenomenal job guarding the three-point line, holding the Cavaliers to five-of-twenty-five from beyond the arc.

The Mountaineers scoring was again a sign of the team's balance, as five different players hit double figures in the contest. Senior Neil Fryer had a team-high sixteen points, while juniors Josh Landsverk and Jordan Gregg tallied fourteen apiece. Senior Paul Carollo had a game-high twelve rebounds to go with six points.

Concordia was paced by reserve Jourdan Sweeney, who had a double-double with a game-high nineteen points and team-high eleven rebounds. The Mountaineers have another daunting week as they will face two quality opponents in three games this week.

Eastern Oregon will host the Thunderbirds from Cascade College on Monday, January 19th in a rescheduled game from earlier in the year. The Mountaineers will then travel to Portland, Ore. to face the Knights of Warner Pacific College on Friday, January 23rd and will then square off with the Thunderbirds again on Saturday, January 24th. All three games are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. PST.
