Logan's Career-High in Points Leads Corban Past Cavaliers of Concordia
SALEM, Ore. – Sophomore Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) scored a career-high 24 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field, as Corban's men's basketball team picked up a much-needed victory over the visiting Cavaliers of Concordia, 87-82, Tuesday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
"It always feels better to win than lose," commented seventh-year head coach Justin Sherwood. "First half, I thought we played really well for the first 13 or 14 minutes and then we had a stretch in the middle where we let them come back (before) putting it on at the end. The second half, (we) came out and played pretty good as we were just okay. We just needed to make free throws there at the end, as it got a lot closer than it should have been."
Corban came out and opened the first half by grabbing a quick 11-point lead (21-10) following a Logan jumper in the paint with 12:45 remaining. Concordia would battle back to take a three-point lead (28-25) via an 18-4 run that was capped by a pair of free throws by Sergio Rosario with just over six minutes left on the clock. The Warriors would recapture the lead and then build it to as much as 10 points (41-31) following a 16-3 run that was highlighted by three straight jumpers by junior Paul Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) within a span of 62 seconds. Concordia's Steven Vaughn closed out the first half scoring making 1-of-3 free throw attempts with no time left on the clock, as Corban went into the locker room with a nine-point cushion (41-32).
In the second half, a lay-up by Martin would increase the Warriors' lead back to double digits (43-32) before Concordia used a 15-7 run over a span of five minutes and 19 seconds to pull back within three points (50-47) following a Jourdan Sweeney three-point play with 14:16 left in the game. The host Warriors would push their lead to as much as 13 points (74-61) following a Logan old-fashion three-point play with 6:14 on the clock. Clinging to a 10-point lead with just over two minutes left, Corban was forced to win the game at the free throw line and subsequently went 2-for-8 over the next 79 seconds to allow Concordia to pull within four points (83-79) following a Vaughn three-pointer with 41 seconds remaining. Sophomores Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) and Bryan Martin (Salem, Ore.) went a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line over the next 18 seconds, as Corban held off a Cavalier comeback attempt to grab the five-point victory (87-82).
Besides Logan's career-high in points and a team-high tying seven rebounds, senior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) added 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the field to go along with rebounding effort that tied Logan for the team lead. The Martin brothers -- Clay and Paul -- added 13 and 11 points respectively, as Paul Martin missed a triple-double by one assist thanks to his game-high nine and four rebounds.
"(My career-high in points) feels good," said Logan. "I shot at 2 o'clock with Coach and I was really feeling it, as he told me to hunt for my shot. So that is what I came out and did tonight."
For Concordia, Vaughn poured in a career-high 38 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the field that included a 5-for-9 performance from beyond the arc to go along with a 13-for-16 showing from the free throw line. Vaughn was aided by Sweeney's 13-point effort, while Gage Aker added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot 31-for-59 (52.5%) from the field that included a 6-for-20 (30.0%) performance from three-point land and a 19-for-31 (61.3%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia was 28-for-65 (43.1%) from the field to go along with a 6-for-19 (31.6%) showing from beyond the arc and a 20-for-26 (76.9%) performance at the charity stripe.
With the win, Corban extends its home winning streak to three games en route to improving to 7-13 overall and 3-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia falls for the fourth straight game and drops to 7-13 overall that includes a 2-9 mark in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the floor on Friday, January 23rd, when they host the Beacons of Northwest Christian beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
