Green Joins ESC Women's Soccer Coaching Staff
OLYMPIA, WA - Former Geoduck Soccer standout Kate Green will join the women's coaching staff as the Associate Head Coach this fall. Working alongside John Purtteman, Green will assist in team management and bring her enthusiam to the coaching staff.
Coaching has been in Green's blood for a long time. As team captain she has been a natural leader since transferring from Seattle University in 2005.
During the 2006 season, injured and unable to play, Green willingly took on an active role in helping the team. With the sudden departure of the head coach mid-season leaving assistant Luise Frank short-handed, Green and Purtteman stepped up to help. The team went on to win 6 of their final 9 games.
Last summer prior to the season, Green spent time in Uganda, Africa to research for her school HIV/AIDS project. In that time she was volunteering at a boarding school teaching english and physical education. There she also made the time to coach young girls. While soccer is hugely popular in Uganda, there were no teams in the area for women. With the help of coach Purtteman and others, Green pulled together donated equipment and organized the team.
In the 2008 season Green was named to the All-Cascade Conference First Team for her efforts on the field. The midfielder scored 9 goals in the season, ranked 2nd in the conference in shots, first in shots per game and 7th in point total (goals + assists combined).
Green's sister Jill, a current sophomore at Evergreen, will play her second season with ESC this fall.
Along with Green and Purtteman, Will Lieste will enter his third year as keeper coach and Sonja Purtteman continues as the teams strength coach.
