Northwest U.'s #11 Rachel Mitchell scored a game high 33 points
Northwest U. Defeats Corban As Mitchell Scores 33
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University’s Rachel Mitchell came through with a 33 point performance on homecoming night as the NU Eagles defeated Corban College, 78-66, in Cascade Conference play tonight.
With NU down 32-29 and 1:08 left in the first half, Mitchell (N. Bend, Wash.) scored the final five points of the half on a 3-pointer and a jumper with 5 seconds left on the clock to give the Eagles a 34-32 lead going into the locker room.
Corban would not give up and would come out hot and go on an 8-2 run to lead, 40-36 with 16:07 left. Corban's Katie Steigelman's jumper would give Corban a 44-39 lead at the 14:13 mark and would hold onto the lead until 6 minutes later when Mitchell's 3-point shot would tie the game at 55-55. Another Mitchell trey would give NU the lead 58-57 with 7:08 left in the game. NU would slowly distance themselves from the Warriors as Jessalyn Jackson's jumper and free throw would end a 5-0 run with 3:24 remaining to give Northwest a 69-62 lead and the Eagles would go 7 for 8 from the free throw line the final 2 minutes of the contest to close out the victory.
Mitchell, a senior guard, shot 11-19 from the field, 6 for 8 from beyond the 3-point arc and 5 for 6 from the free throw line for her game high 33 points for Northwest U. (7-15, 5-8 CCC). Freshman Carleigh Newman (Ferndale, Wash.) added 14 points and 5 rebounds for the Eagles who shot 41% for the game and 43% from the 3-point line. NU shot 89.5% (17-19) from the free throw line in the second half.
"This was a great team win for us tonight," commented NU head coach Lori Napier following the game. "We've played well the last few games but didn't finish, so this was a nice win for the team. It was also great to see Rachel play so confidently."
Corban (8-13, 4-9 CCC) was led by freshman Katie Steigelman's (Eugene, Ore.) 17 points and 5 rebounds while teammate Jennesa Miller (Soph., Mica, Wash.) contributed 13 points for the Warriors. Senior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) added 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Warriors shot 38.6% from 2-point range and 29% shooting from the 3-point line. Corban out rebounded NU 45 to 32 including 18 offensive rebounds.
Northwest U. will remain at home tomorrow night as they host Concordia University in the Pavilion and Corban College travels to Olympia to take on the Evergreen State College. Both games are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
