Cavs Overcome First-Half Deficit to Defeat Warriors
PORTLAND, Ore.— Pulling just as many offensive rebounds as Corban had total rebounds, Concordia grinded their way to a 73-65 victory in women’s basketball action on Tuesday night.
With their 13th straight win, Concordia improved to 13-1 on the year and kept their perfect Cascade Collegiate Conference record (6-0) intact. Corban fell to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the CCC.
“They (Corban) came in with a great game plan and rattled us early. Our kids came out with a good effort to the start of the second half and were able to sustain it for the victory,” Concordia head coach Aaron Christian said.
Behind six points each by Kailey Bostwick, Katie Steigleman and Monique Tribble in the first half, Corban jumped out to a 30-25 lead through the first 20 minutes, but a layup by Ann Snodderly in the opening moments of the second brought the Cavs back to even with the score nodded at 32-32.
The two teams would trade baskets in the next four possessions before the Cavaliers struck with a 17-3 run to put Concordia up 51-38 with 11 minutes to play.
With six minutes to go, a Rebecca Gimeno three pointer would give the Cavs a 20-point advantage for the game’s largest difference, but CU would score just four points the rest of the half as the Warriors whittled the deficit down to eight after ending the contest with a 16-4 run.
Gimeno would lead the Cavs with 21 points, one shy of a season high. Gimeno connected on 9 of 16 from the field, including 3 of 6 from three-point territory. Providing a solid attack off the bench, Maryam Razavi added 18 points for the second straight game while Angela Gimeno posted a team high six assists and 10 rebounds.
Jennessa Miller recorded a team high17 points for Corban, followed by 11 for Steigleman and 10 for Tribble.
Concordia returns to action on Jan. 9 when it hosts Warner Pacific College at 5:30 p.m. inside the Cavalier Gymnasium.
