Cavalier Mens Golf Inks Three for Fall of 2009
PORTLAND, Ore.— John Dalton of Seattle, Kevin McBride of Honolulu and Todd Oakes of Ilwaco, Wash., have signed to continue their education and compete for the Concordia University men’s golf team, Cavalier head coach Ronn Grove announced.
John ‘Jed’ Dalton will graduate from Bishop Blanchet (Seattle) in 2009. He was a four-time letterwinner and two-time state qualifier for the Braves. After qualifying for districts as a sophomore, Dalton earned second-team All-Metro honors as a junior. As a senior, Dalton earned first-team All-Metro recognition after a fourth-place individual finish. John is the son of Ann Dalton and Steve Swenson and plans to major in education.
“Jed will be a fine addition. He is an excellent competitor and has a very strong passion for the game,” Grove said. “He is long off the tee and has a good iron game. As maturity sets in he will be a strong leader on this team.”
Kevin McBride will arrive at Concordia after a four-year prep golf career at Kamehameha-Kapalama located in Hawaii. McBride placed third overall at conference as a junior and came back with a third-place result at state as a senior. He recorded the team’s lowest scoring average in his final two seasons. Kevin is the son of Lauren and Kirk McBride and is undecided on a college major.
“Kevin comes from a high school that just keeps producing top-grade athletes to all collegiate levels. Our Hawaiian connection is growing and Kevin will be a very welcome addition to the team,” Grove said.
Todd Oakes placed inside the top 15 at the Washington IA Championships the past three seasons; placing 13th overall as a sophomore and again as a junior after a 12th-place result in his freshman campaign.. Oakes has also led Ilwaco High School to three district titles and a pair of fourth-place finishes at state before guiding the Fisherman to a state title last season. Todd is the son of Julie and Ronald Oakes and plans to major in business at Concordia.
“Todd is capable of playing NCAA Division I golf. He is a very good player with an ability that will make him an immediate impact player on our team. We are looking for some great accomplishments from Todd during his collegiate career,” Grove said.
The Concordia men’s golf team is currently receiving votes towards the NAIA top 25 poll. Last season, the first under Grove, the Cavaliers placed fifth at the NAIA Region I Championships after collecting a Cascade Collegiate Conference championship in the league’s inaugural title event.
