Concordia Survives to Beat OIT In OT, 2-1
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The Oregon Tech women's soccer team had opportunities for a major upset today against No. 5 Concordia University, but it was the Cavs that capitalized in the second overtime period, defeating the Owls 2-1. Oregon Tech drops to 10-4 overall and even in league play at 3-3. No. 5 ranked Concordia improves to 14-1 on the season and 6-0 in CCC action.
After a scoreless first half the Cavaliers got on the board early in period two when Alex Thomas headed in a cross by Angie Turner at the 49:10 mark to give CU a 1-0 lead.
Oregon Tech, only recording two shots on goal midway into the second half, finally penetrated a tough CU defense in the 56th minute. Tech was able to center a ball that the Cavs were unable to clear. Kaila Dillon then settled the ball and dribbled around the lone CU defender to the right and rifled a shot back to the left corner to tie the contest at 1-1.
Concordia had three more shots, while Oregon Tech's lone attempt in the 85th minute sailed wide left, as both teams went into the extra period tied at 1-1.
Two minutes into the first overtime, Crystal Foster pounded a ball that missed high. One minute later it was CU's turn, but the Cavs would miss wide right. Tech then kicked a ball high into the CU box and after a header try that did not prevail; the CU keeper was whistled for a foul that left the Owls with a penalty kick. The chance for upset sailed high, as both teams would battle to double overtime.
After three more scoring opportunities for Tech, including a Sharon Hernandez blast from 30 yards out that hit off the crossbar, CU finally got the goal to end it. CU's Chelsea Malnes hit a perfect cross to Cav leading scorer, Jessica Ramback, which she got past the Tech keeper for the game-winner at the 106:56 mark.
The Owls host Warner Pacific College on Saturday at 7 pm where six Tech seniors and one junior will be honored prior to kick off. It is the last regular season home game for the Owls this season.
