Corban's Hanson Nets Game-Winner Against Northwest
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Junior Katie Hanson (Salem, Ore.) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 71st minute, as Corban's women's soccer team extended its winning streak to five games with a victory over Northwest, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Warrior Field.
With today's win, Corban improves its record to 8-5-2 overall and 5-1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest falls to 1-10-2 overall and remains without a win in conference play at 0-6-1.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams combine for 11 shots (six for Northwest & five for Corban), both teams played an even final 45 minutes with the host Warriors getting two goals within a 15-minute span that helped extend their winning ways.
Northwest had a chance to score the game's opening goal in the 18th minute when Abby Brauer eluded a diving Corban keeper and had nothing but wide open space between her and goal. Fortunately for the host Warriors, Brauer's shot was not on target and it sailed left of the goal to preserve the scoreless tie.
Hanson got the scoring started at the 70:23 mark when she finished off a combo assist from senior Marissa Walter (Elk Grove, Calif.) and sophomore Amanda Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.). The scoring play began when Walter sent a corner kick from the far side line onto the awaiting head of Mendenhall, who sent a header onto the foot of Hanson. Without hesitation, the third-year Warrior blasted a five-yard shot into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season that turn out to be the game-winning score.
At the 84:20 mark, junior Erin Laughlin (Ephrata, Wash.) added an insurance goal when she skipped an 18-yard free kick from the near sideline past Northwest's defense and into the lower right corner of the goal. Laughlin's second goal of the season was a beautiful arching kick that seemed to float along the ground and past the visiting Eagles' defense for the game's final goal.
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) kept the Warriors' net clean, as she recorded a game-high six saves that included a couple of point-blank shots by Northwest for her fifth shutout of the season. Meanwhile, Jordan Holmes registered a pair of saves for Northwest in the loss.
Corban will return to the field tomorrow – Saturday, October 17th – when they host the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College as part of an afternoon double header that will conclude with the women's game at 2:30 p.m. Both of Corban's men's & women's games tomorrow against Evergreen will be played at Guido Caldarazzo Stadium on the campus of South Salem High School.
