C of I Men Open Big Road Trip with Shutout of Corban
PORTLAND, Ore. - Matt Kelly scored a pair of goals, while keepers Aaron Reynolds and Trevor Spielman kept Corban College at bay, as The College of Idaho men's soccer team opened a crucial three-game road trip in the Willamette Valley with a 3-0 victory this evening at Delta Park.
The Coyotes (6-4-1, 6-2-1 CCC) were originally to play the Warriors in Salem at 4 p.m., however, due to the threat of darkness, the match was moved to Delta Park in the Rose City - a neutral field for both teams.
The C of I jumped on top in the 12th minute, as Jesus Lopez crossed a ball to the left side of the goal, finding a sliding left foot of Cesar Aguirre to make it 1-0. The Yotes would make it 2-0 just before halftime, as Kelly pounced on a rebound of a Brian Buckingham shot and flicked home the score from just outside the six-yard box. The freshman would cap the scoring in the 50th minute, touching home a pass from Kazuki Murata.
Reynolds turned away one shot on goal in 55 minutes of action, while Spielman, in his first stint in goal this season, made three saves in 35 minutes to notch the Coyotes second shutout of the year. The Warriors (2-10-1, 1-9-1 CCC) had a quality opporunity late in the match, but Spielman turned away a Mark Mendenhall header off a corner.
The Yotes held a 17-8 edge in shots, while the two teams combined for six cautions and 32 total fouls.
The C of I returns to action tomorrow, meeting Warner Pacific at 2 p.m. (PT) - at David Douglas High School.
