ST. CLARITA, Calif. –Behind an eighth-place finish by freshman Jed Dalton, the Concordia men’s golf team finished in sixth place at the Mustang Invitational hosted by Holy Names University this week.

The Cavalier men lowered its score in each round to finish with an 88-over 952 in the three-round, two-day event. Concordia (321-3129-312—952) defeated Biola University (328-314-319—961) by nine strokes and was edged by Point Loma Nazarene (308-312-327—947) by five strokes.

Defending NCAA Division II champion Sonoma State (289-285-306—290) took the team title as the lone team to shoot under a 900 for the tournament. Ten shots back, the hosting school Holy Names (303-291-306—900), placed second overall and Cal Baptist (317-294-309—920) finished third. Concordia was the lone school among the 12 competing teams to cut its score in each round.

Dalton (72-77-78—227) finished in a five-way tie for eighth place to lead the Cavaliers. Taylor Shimomura (83-80-74—237) used a tournament low 2-over 74 in the final round to jump into a tie for 22nd as CU’s No. 2 individual. Three shots back of Shimomura, Jonny Miller (82-79-29—240) placed 29th overall among 59 golfers with the aid of back-to-back 79s.

Rounding out the CU contingent were Jared Moe (84-83-81—248) and Blake Blakey (93-92-86—271).

Sonoma State’s Patrick Bauer (72-69-74—215) used a 3-under 69 in the middle round to propel himself to medalist honors with a six-stroke win over runner-up Carl Stjarnfalt (78-68-75—221) of Cal Baptist.

The event concludes the fall season for the Cavs. Play resumes on March 22-23 when the team travels to Blue River, Ore., for a Cascade Collegiate Conference event at Tokatee Golf Course.
