HERMISTON, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team opened the 2009-10 season with a convincing 93-21 win over Walla Walla University Tuesday.

The Mountaineers went on a 25-2 run over an eight minute span in the first half to stretch an 8-6 lead, into a 33-8 lead. EOU controlled the second half as well holding the Wolves scoreless for the first 11 minutes, and only allowing three field goals in the final 20 minutes.

Eastern was led by Anne Barnett. The junior transfer from the University of Idaho scored a game-high 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the floor. Barnett added eight rebounds for the Mountaineers.

EOU’s Rosebud Guthrie led both teams with 10 rebounds in her freshman debut. Samantha Flett scored 11 points on 5 for 7 shooting from the field, and had a game-high three steals for Eastern Oregon. Ashlee Michelson chipped in 10 points for the Mountaineers. Salena Leavitt and Shaylee Nielsen each had a game-high four assists.

As a team EOU finished with 23 assists, compared to the Wolves three. Eastern outrebounded WWU 65-28, and had 22 turnovers compared to Walla Walla’s 31. The Mountaineers shot 49 percent from the field and held the Wolves to 18 percent. EOU was 5 for 18 from behind the arc, and WWU was 0 for 8.

Eastern Oregon returns to the court Saturday against Montana Tech in Butte, Mont. The game tips off at 7 p.m. MT.
