Concordia Sweeps Corban for Fourth Straight

PORTLAND, Ore.—With three players reaching double figures in kills, Concordia defeated Corban 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-22) in volleyball action on Saturday night.
With their fourth straight win, Concordia improved to 10-6 on the year and finished the first round of play in the Cascade Collegiate Conference with a league 7-2 mark. Corban dropped to 5-12 overall and 4-5 in the CCC.
Mariana Toscano (Portland, Ore.) led the Cavalier attack with six kills in the first game and seven in the second en route to a match-high 16 kills and a stellar .484 hitting percentage. Teammates Raluca Dinca (Portland, Ore.) and Clair Thiel (Oak Harbor, Wash.) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, as the Cavaliers hit a combined .292 in the series.
Corban briefly held a 9-8 lead in the first game and kept the score close throughout. A ball handling error on the Cavs tied the match at 21-21 but CU responded with the final four points to take the first game.
In the second, early kills by Teri Braun gave the Warriors a 7-5 lead, but the home squad would compile an 8-0 run to take the lead and finish Corban off with an 11-to-4 effort to cruise to the 25-13 victory.
In the third game, the Warriors received the first two points of the game and later grabbed a 14-12 lead, both matching their largest lead in the entire match, before Concordia took eight of the next nine points to boost the Cavs to the 25-22 clincher.
“I thought we came out and put together a consistent level of play tonight,” CU head coach Melanie Hambelton said. ”Everyone stepped up and played good team volleyball.”
Concordia’s Skyler Kamaka (Kaneohe, Hawaii) recorded 42 assists for a rate of 14.0 assists per game. Teammate Kim Lindow (Gresham, Ore.) reached for a match-high 22 digs. Aria Nojima (Gresham, Ore.) and Dinca added 13 digs each as the Cavaliers outdug the Warriors 67-to-45.
Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) had a team-high 18 digs while Karissa Calderon (Murieta, Calif.) posted 15 assists. Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) came through for five blocks as Corban tallied eight blocks to the Cavaliers’ five.
