CU's Facundo Dipascuale scored the first and final goals for the Cavs against Evergreen State on Tuesday.
Cavaliers Bombard Geoducks 4-1
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore.—Peppering Evergreen State with 27 shot attempts, Concordia defeated the Geoducks 4-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action Tuesday night at Delta Park.
With the win, Concordia improved to 7-2-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the CCC while Evergreen State dropped to 2-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league action. The win for CU followed a 2-0 loss at Oregon Tech last week which snapped a five-match winning streak.
“The nice part is the guys did a good job of getting back on course,” CU head coach Dan Birkey said. “We were much more excited to go forward and be hungry to get chances. College soccer is often about having an aggressive intelligence and we kept our game simple without losing our persistence and aggressiveness.”
Facundo Dipascuale (Buenos Aires, Argentina) got the Cavaliers on the board in the 18th minute after successive passes by teammates Zack Madison (Bend, Ore.) and Mirza Ramic (Banja Luka, Bosnia). Madison used a long throw in towards the box where Mirza was able to flick the sphere to Dipascuale after the defense failed to clear that ball.
Just before the close of the first half, Concordia freshman Jared Brace (Vancouver, Wash.) doubled the lead with a rocket from 18 yards out after a feed from defender Evan Denmark (Renton, Wash.)in the 43rd minute.
In the 58th minute, another CU freshman, Stephen Pies (Portland, Ore.), stretched the lead to 3-0 by using a Kossivi Alokpovi (Lome, Togo)pass to direct the ball into the back of the net from 15 yards away.
Moments later, Evergreen’s Corey Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska)lit the board with a successful shot in a one-versus-one situation created with the help of teammate George Bundy (Enumclaw, Wash.).
Limiting the Geoducks to that lone shot in the second half, Dipascuale regained the three-goal advantage for CU with a shot from 13 yards after receiving the ball from a deflection following a save by Evergreen keeper Casey Collins (Seattle, Wash.). Brace set up the play with the leaping header which sent the ball backs towards Dipascuale in the 75th minute of action.
“Putting four on a tough team like Evergreen is always nice to see,” Birkey said. “The guys were clicking which was important as in this league you can’t afford to let games slip away.”
Evergreen took four attempts in the match with the score being the lone fire on goal. Claudio Lazar (Ploiesti, Romania)picked up the win as keeper for the Cavs while Collins took the loss with six saves on the night.
Concordia returns to action on Oct. 11 when it travels to face College of Idaho (5-2-1, 5-0-1 CCC) to face the Yotes who are undefeated in CCC play. Evergreen will host Northwest Christian (1-7-1, 0-4-1 CCC) on Oct. 9.
