Owls Edge Eagles in Shut Out Win
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Oregon Tech scored a lone goal in the 79th minute the game today to earn a 1-0 shut out victory over Northwest U. in Cascade Conference play. It was a perfect fall day for soccer with sunny skies and 60 degree temperatures.
Neither team could manage a score in the first half although Northwest had the shot advantage 14-4 over the Owls. After the first 45 minutes of play the teams headed into halftime deadlocked 0-0. All of OIT’s goalkeeper Tommy Burden’s saves (6) came in the first half as he turned away NU shots on goal.
Tech’s Devin Torrey (Sr., Medford, Ore.) scored the game winner at the 79:56 mark in the second half to clinch the victory for the Owls (6-4-1, 3-3-1 CCC) from the left side, 10 yards out and past NU goalkeeper Kyle Wall (Sr., Seattle, Wash.). Teammate Leo Keiser (Soph., Medford, Ore.) earned the assist on the play.
Northwest would out shoot OIT 19-12, but Oregon Tech’s Tommy Burden earned the shutout. Sophomore Luke Fischer (Kalispell, Mont.) led NU with 5 shots, 2 shots on goal.
“Our biggest obstacle right now is putting the ball into the back of the net,” commented Head Coach Gary McIntosh after the game. “I’ve felt we’ve been playing really good soccer these past few games but we just can’t seem to find a way to score goals. We’ll just keep working until we can, that’s just part of the game of soccer,” McIntosh concluded.
Northwest will host Northwest Christian University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. on the NU Athletic Field. Oregon Tech takes on the Evergreen State College in Olympia in the second game of a doubleheader with their women’s team Saturday at 4 p.m.
