CU's Kaitlyn Tebbs scored the golden goal five minutes into overtime against Simon Fraser on Thursday.
No. 5 Concordia Holds Off No. 8 Simon Fraser in Overtime 2-1
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore.—With a goal in the 95th minute, No.5-ranked Concordia defeated No. 8 Simon Fraser 2-1 in a non-conference women’s soccer match played at Delta Park on Thursday night.
In a tight match throughout, Concordia’s Kaitlyn Tebbs rattled the net after recouping her own blocked shot for the golden goal giving the Cavaliers its NAIA-leading 12th win of the season. Concordia’s (12-1-0) lone loss of the year was to No.1-ranked Cal Baptist. Simon Fraser dropped to 6-4-1 on the year.
“Overall it was a very good college soccer game,” CU head coach Grant Landy said. “I have a lot of respect what Shelly Howieson (Simon Fraser head coach) has done with her program, but it felt like today was going to be our day with a good week of training. The girls looked poised.”
Moments after Tebbs nearly gave CU an early lead with a 15-yard shot from deep on the left side which ended up harmlessly shaking the crossbar, Simon Fraser returned down the field for a scoring chance of their own.
Drawing a foul inside its own box led to a Simon Fraser penalty kick by Ari Adams in the 20th minute. Adams would convert the attempt with a dart into the left-side of the net to beat CU keeper Georgie Christensen, forcing the Cavs into a 1-0 deficit.
Concordia would square the contest of top-10 teams with an Angie Turner header in the 32nd minute. After a cross from the right side, Turner was able to control the ball from eight yards out; sending it into the near post for the equalizing score.
Neither team would break the deadlock over the next 55-plus minutes of play to setup the extra session.
Mimicking her dash in the first half, Tebbs was able to charge towards the endline with the ball. Turning inward and firing an almost parallel shot across the face of the goal, Tebbs’ attempts got deflected back to the junior forward by the Simon Fraser defense, but this time providing a clearer shot and a friendlier angle.
Now 12 yards away from the near post, Tebbs’ second attempt was able to tightly bend around SFU keeper Cassie Newbrook and into the far post.
“Our defense played extremely very well by limiting their scoring chances,” Landy said. And Tebbs just had a fantastic game. She created a lot and held the ball with a great work rate.”
Concordia held an 8-to-6 edge in shots before expanding the margin with the lone two shot attempts in overtime. Christensen came up with a pair of saves in the win while Newbrook stopped three attempts.
Concordia returns to action on Oct. 10 when it hosts Warner Pacific. Simon Fraser will look to rebound with a home match against St. Martin’s on Oct. 11.
