SALEM, Ore. – In the second game of the 2009 Bruce Henderson Memorial Capital City Classic, Corban's women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season with a wire-to-wire win over Bethany University, 76-48, Friday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

 

After two weeks of competition, Corban finds itself at 1-5 overall. Meanwhile, Bethany remains without a win at 0-7 this season.

Sophomore Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) led all players in scoring with a game-high 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field that included a 3-for-5 showing from behind the three-point line. The second-year Warrior also registered five rebounds and a game-high tying five steals in 25 minutes of action.

Steigleman was aided scoring-wise by freshman Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.), who tallied 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) and junior Ashlee Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) chipped in with nine and seven points respectively off the bench, while freshman Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) turned in a 6-point, 6-assist, 4-rebound performance in her first collegiate start.

Corban scored the opening four points on a jumper by junior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) and a pair of free throws by Bennett in the game's first minute of play. From that point on, the host Warriors proceeded to extend their lead to as much as 22 points (40-18) following a lay-in by junior Jennifer Hansen (Mulino, Ore.) with 17 ticks remaining in the opening half. In the first half, Corban scored 17 of its 40 points off 19 Bethany turnovers and got 22 points in the paint.

In the second half, the host Warriors continued to apply the offensive pressure and extended their lead to as much as 35 points (73-38) after a pair of free throws by Bennett with 4:37 left in the game. Bethany would get within 28 points (74-46) after a jumper by Ellie Markwardt, but the visiting Bruins could not get any closer as the final score of 76-48 handed the host Warriors their first win of the season.

Rachael Estabrook led Bethany with 15 points on 4-for-10 shooting from the field that included a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free throw line. Amanda Fox and Markwardt assisted Estabrook in scoring with nine points each, while Stephanie Caldwell added six points and a team-high tying five rebounds.

As a team, Corban shot 28-for-60 (46.7%) from the field that included a 14-for-26 (53.8%) showing in the opening half. On the other hand, Bethany was 18-for-54 (33.3%) from the field that included a 10-for-25 (40.0%) showing in the second half.

Corban will return to the hardwood tomorrow – Saturday, November 28th – in the final game of the 2009 Bruce Henderson Memorial Capital City Classic against William Jessup beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

NOTE: In the opening game of the 2009 Bruce Henderson Memorial Capital City Classic on Friday, Willamette defeated William Jessup, 71-58, behind a 22-point, 17-rebound performance by Keilyn Fujioka. The Bearcats will play host to the Bruins of Bethany University beginning Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the third game of this weekend's holiday classic inside C.E. Jeffers Sports Center on the campus of Corban College.
