Corban Falls to D-III Pioneers of Lewis & Clark
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – Two days after winning the 2009 Bruce Henderson Memorial Capital City Classic, Corban's women's basketball team returned to the court and fell to NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark, 72-48, Monday evening inside the Pamplin Sports Complex.
With the loss, Corban falls to 2-6 overall. Meanwhile, Lewis & Clark continues its schedule against Cascade Collegiate Conference teams with its fourth victory against five CCC foes and improves to 4-1 overall.
Sophomore Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.), who was named conference Player of the Week earlier on Monday, led Corban in scoring with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. The second-year Warrior began the game's scoring with a lay-up 38 seconds into the contest before having to wait nearly seven minutes until her next points.
Senior Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.), who returned to the starting lineup after coming off the bench in each of the Warriors' last two games, tallied 10 points on 5-for-10 shooting to go along with an eight-point, three-rebound performance from freshman Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) after the first-year Warrior was named MVP of this past weekend's holiday tournament.
The visiting Warriors held a two-point lead (14-12) following a Tribble jumper with 11:41 remaining in the first half. Unfortunately, Corban's lead would not hold as Lewis & Clark used a 20-11 run over the final 11-plus minutes of the opening half to secure a seven-point lead (32-25) at intermission.
Lewis & Clark would never trail after Talerra Rich's lay-in with 11:03 showing on the first half clock, as the host Pioneers slowly built their lead to as much as 24 points (72-48) at the final buzzer.
Megan Spence led Lewis & Clark with a game-high 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field, while Rich added 11 points and Margaret Dowling pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Four Pioneers – Kristina Williams, Christina Herring, Sara Villanueava, and Neva Hauser – each tallied nine points, while Herring handed out a game-high five assists to go along with her game-high four steals.
Corban shot 17-for-51 (33.3%) from the field, while going 2-for-11 (18.2%) from three-point distance and 12-for-22 (54.5%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Lewis & Clark was 27-for-65 (41.5%) from the field to go along with a 4-for-12 (33.3%) showing from long distance and a 14-for-19 (73.7%) performance at the charity stripe.
The Warriors will return to the hardwood on Friday, December 4th, when they open Cascade Collegiate Conference play against the Beacons of Northwest Christian beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
