Corban's Miller Chops Down Evergreen With Career-High

SALEM, Ore. – Junior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) scored a career-high 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field and a 5-for-6 showing from the free throw line, as Corban extended its winning streak to three games with a 69-65 victory over Evergreen Monday evening inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With tonight's result, Corban improves to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Evergreen falls to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Along with her career-high in points, Miller added eight rebounds, a team-leading three steals, a game-high three blocks, and two assists in 30 minutes of action. The third-year Warrior was aided by sophomore Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) and freshman Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.), who tallied 14 and 11 points respectively. Buhler came off the bench to grab six rebounds and turned in a 4-for-5 showing from beyond the three-point line, while Tsugawa would add a game-high eight assists and five rebounds while making her eighth start of the season. On the boards, sophomore Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.) came off the bench to pull down a game-high nine rebounds for the Warriors.
After a see-saw battle over the opening 12-plus minutes, Corban used a 19-5 run following a 21-21 tie that resulted in a 14-point lead (40-26) after a lay-in by freshman Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) with 2:36 remaining. Evergreen would scored the final nine points of the half, as the visiting Geoducks would pull within five points (40-35) at the half thanks to a Tana Palmason free throw for the final points of the opening twenty minutes.
In the second half, Corban would continue to hold the lead and pushed it to as much as nine points (60-51) following a fast break lay-in by Miller with 7:30 on the clock. Evergreen would get within two points (67-65) thanks to a 14-7 run after a Palmason three-pointer with 27 seconds left in the game. Corban would close out the scoring with a pair of free throws by sophomore Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.), as the host Warriors captured their first conference win of the season by a margin of four points (69-65).
Evergreen was led by Latrina Woods, who tallied a team-high 18 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field to go along with seven assists, six rebounds, and a game-high four steals in 40 minutes of action. Woods was aided scoring-wise by Katie Garcin and Palmason, who tallied 14 and 10 points respectively to go along with Angel Stewart's team-high eight rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot 23-for-58 (39.7%) from the field to go along with a 6-for-9 (66.7%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 17-for-28 (60.7%) performance from the free throw line. On the other hand, Evergreen was 23-for-64 (35.9%) from the field, 6-for-18 (33.3%) from long distance, and 13-for-19 (68.4%) from the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the hardwood tomorrow – Tuesday, December 22nd – against the Eagles of Northwest beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
