The Eastern Oregon University Athletic Department and the Universities Center for Student Involvement have embarked on a partnership to merge the NAIA Champions of Character program and the campus National Society for leadership and Success Chapter.

Six student athletes have been identified to become part of a new Athletic Leadership Committee. They will go through the NSLS training and bring information and programming back to their teams. In addition they will be active in the planning and organization of athletic department wide service projects. Student Athletes taking part in the program include; Justin Udy from Football, Seth Kimball from Football, Kyle Miller from Women’s Basketball, Ashlie Hughes from Softball, Star Swan from Soccer and Jessica Lea from Volleyball.

“The intent of the partnership is take advantage of each programs mission, goals and resources to better serve our students,” Director of Athletics Rob Cashell said.

The National Society for Leadership and Success is coordinated by Hailey Wolcott, Assistant Director for the Center for Student Involvement. The Center for Student Involvement oversees all student clubs and organizations. The National Society of Leadership and Success Chapter at EOU was founded in January of 2009. The program is for students interested in learning more about leadership, honing their interpersonal skills and reaching their goals.

The NAIA Champions of Character process encourages student-athletes to discover the character traits that are within their control and identify steps they can take before, after and during the contest to intentionally incorporate those traits into their heart and mind. Student-athletes learn how to develop a champion mindset and as a result become better athletes, teammates, community members and employees.
