PORTLAND, Ore.— College of Idaho shot 61.5 percent from the floor in the second half to defeat Concordia 72-59 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball tilt in a rematch of last year’s conference tournament championship.

With the win, C of I improved to 9-4 on the season and 5-1 in CCC action while Concordia, ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA poll, dropped to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in league play.

A day after a wire-to-wire loss to Eastern Oregon, Concordia opened the game with the initial bucket, a jumper by Mariah Ladd, but would quickly see C of I tie the game on a Brett Rubie layup. After a Yote free throw to take the lead, CU’s Danielle Clauson connected on back-to-back buckets for a 6-3 Cavalier advantage.

With five points each from Nicole Bruce and Whitney Owen, College of Idaho scored 10 straight points to stake a 12-6 lead. The Yotes would push the gap to as much as 10 in the first half before Concordia stormed back late in the period to make it a one-possession game at the break with the score 30-28.

After being held to 26.5 percent from the floor in the first half, C of I bounced back in the second by connecting on 16 of 26 attempts for a 61.5 percent clip to pull away from the Cavaliers.

With under six minutes to play, a pair of free throws by Nicole Gall gave the Yotes a 64-51 lead. The deficit would prove to be too much to overcome for the home side as the Cavs would get as close to eight down the stretch via a Rachel Scarpelli free throw with four minutes to play.

Katie Strunk sunk a team-high 23 points after hitting 9 of 19 from the field to lead the Yotes while senior Ann Snodderly posted a career-high 24-point night after converting 11 of 12 from the field. Cavalier junior Danielle Clauson finished s ingle rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.

Neither team shot well on the night with CU finishing with a slight edge 43.8 percent to 41.7 percent. Both teams secured 37 rebounds with C of I enjoying 15 boards on the offensive end.

Concordia returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Montana Tech while C of I will next take the court on Jan. 8 when it travels to Eastern Oregon.
