Scorching Hot Cavs Take Conference Opener
ASHLAND, ORE. -- Concordia took advantage of red-hot shooting to start the game to score a 81-64 victory over Southern Oregon tonight at McNeal Pavilion.
Concordia improved to 9-0 on the season and 1-0 in Cascade Conference play. Southern Oregon dropped to 7-2 overall and 0-1 in conference. Southern Oregon hosts fifth-ranked Warner Pacific Saturday night.
Alex Tiefenthaler led all scorers with 19 points, including a 3-for-3 effort from the 3-point line.
Justonn Smith had 14 points for the Raiders.
After SOU jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to start the game, Concordia came flying right back and got warm from the field. Five 3-pointers helped the Cavs take a 26-9 lead with 10:00 still to play in the first half.
The lead grew to 34-14 before the Raiders came back with a 8-0 run that was capped by a driving layup by Justonn Smith.
A layup by Ryan Staker helped cut the halftime lead to 39-27.
The second half was all Concordia.
Tiefenthaler had eight quick points to give the Cavs a 53-31 lead and it was all CU from that point on.
Roland Johnson came off the bench for 10 points for the Raiders.
Concordia got 11 points from Drew Preuninger and Dustin Hiebert. Gage Aker finished with six of CU’s 17 assists.
Concordia finished the game shooting 56 percent from the field and 55 percent from the 3-point line.
