Cavs Kick Off Indoor Season at Boise State
BOISE, Idaho—Getting a jump start to the indoor season, five Concordia athletes earned NAIA National Championships automatic qualifying times at the Jacksons Open held at Boise State University on Dec. 4-5.
The Cavaliers earned a pair of auto marks in the men’s 1,000-meter run with Martin Romero-Clark and Cordero Cisneros going 1-2 with Romero-Clark edging his teammate 2:28.65 to 2:29.44 to easily eclipse the ‘A’ standard of 2:31.90.
The men’s squad received a second winning performance and two more NAIA auto mark with Eric Burck crossing the line in 8:35.72 in the 3,000 for first place and Charles Cummings coming in at 8:41.95 for a third-place finish as both runners dipped under the 8:43.00 ‘A’ standard for the event.
Fresh off an All-American performance during the cross country season, Alice Taylor cruised to a 10:06.32 victory in the 3,000 to nab the lone automatic qualifier for the CU women. Lauren Moran followed Taylor with a 10:30.95, just off the 10:28.50 ‘A’ barrier, to finish in second place to earn a provisional mark.
A quartet of school records were established as Taylor dropped more than 17 seconds off the previous women’s 3,000 standard of 10:23.46 and Romero-Clark squeezing .02 off the men’s 1,000 record previously held by Jesse Brown with a 2:28.67.
Junia Limage captured the team’s final provisional presentation with a runner-up result in the women’s 1,000, finishing in 3:05.53 to nearly split the low standard of 3:03.50 and the high standard of 3:07.00.
Limage and Jacoy also entered the CU record books as the first competitors is their respective events,
“This is a good start to the indoor season. It’s always nice to get a few qualifying marks out of the way off of our cross country training before heading into holidays,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “All the kids did a nice job of making the most of the opportunity to qualify. Alice Taylor and Eric Burck will also get a chance to run a 5,000 this weekend at the Kent State Golden Flash meet, which should be a nice racing opportunity for them before they go to break as well.”
