UPS Comes Back to Edge Northwest U.
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest’s Greg George’s jumper from the baseline missed its mark at the buzzer as No. 18 Puget Sound came back from an 18 point deficit to edge Northwest U., 86-85, in a non-conference contest tonight.
Northwest U. led 67-49 with 13:19 left in the second half as UPS would slowly chip away at the Eagle lead. With NU up 79-71 with 5:21 left in the game UPS’ Bryce Levin would hit five consecutive 3-point shots to put the Loggers up 83-79 with 3:11 left. Two free throws by NU’s Greg George would make it 83-81 and Blake Solomon would make one of two free throws to pull Northwest to within one point, 83-82, with 1:34 remaining in the game. Northwest’s Tyson Christie would hit the second of two free throws to tie the score at 83-all at the 1:21 mark and the Loggers’ Nadav Heyman would sink of his two free throws to give UPS an 84-83 lead with 58 seconds on the clock. With 25 seconds left in the game, UPS’ Colin Koach was fouled by NU’s Solomon but Koach was issued a technical foul. Koach would make both of his free throws and so would Solomon, giving UPS the 86-85 lead. Possession was awarded to NU and Solomon’s 3-point attempt rimmed off as the Eagles’ Greg George grabbed the offensive rebound and missed his baseline jumper as time expired.
Blake Solomon (Kent, Wash.) led Northwest U. (5-4, 2-0 CCC) with 19 points. Sophomore Rich Skillman added 13 points while Jason Waltman (Soph., Monroe, Wash.) and junior Stedman Richardson (Federal Way, Wash.) each score 11 for the Eagles. Northwest U. shot 52% from 2-point FG range and 43% from beyond the 3-point arc.
Senior Austin Boyce (Kent, Wash.) scored a game high 23 points for UPS (3-4). Bryce Levin (Sr., Everett, Wash.) scored 18 including 6 for 10 from the 3-point line. Colin Koach (Sr., Portland, Ore.) added 13 points as the Loggers shot 50% from 2-point range and 36% from the 3-point line.
