Northwest U. Pulls Away for 92-76 Win Over Concordia

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University snapped a seven game losing streak as they pulled away for a 92-76 win over Concordia University tonight in Cascade Conference play.
 
Lucas Ashe would put Northwest U. up 17-9 as he drained a jumper with 11:51 left in the first half, but Matt Ochs jumper would pull Concordia to within 3 points, 19-16, at the 10:08 mark. Daley Landon would put Northwest up by eleven, 27-16, with his 3-pointer (7:26). CU’s Gage Aker’s jumper with 41 seconds to go would cut Northwest U. lead to 9 points at halftime.
 
Two Eddie Coulson free throws would give NU a 40-28 lead at the 17:11 point in the second half and the Eagles would maintain a 10 to 11 point lead until freshman Jason Waltman’s trey would increase NU’s lead to 13, 50-37 with 14:45 to go in the game. A Daley Landon 3-point shot would make it 55-39 forty seconds later as the Eagles would build their lead to 16 points. A three point play by CU’s Steven Vaughan would cut Northwest’s lead to 12 points, 69-57, with 6:37 left, but a 3-pointer by NU’s Lucas Ashe would increase NU’s lead to 74-59 as the clock wound down to 5:31. Concordia would get no closer as Jason Yecny’s to free throws would end the scoring for CU and the game and a 92-76 victory for Northwest U.
 
Northwest University’s (11-12, 5-9 CCC) senior Eddie Coulson (N. Las Vegas, Nev.) tied for game high honors with 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Guard Blake Solomon (Kent, Wash.) added 20 points and junior Daley Landon (Waterville, Wash.) and sophomore Lucas Ashe (Spokane, Wash.) each scored 11 for the Eagles. Sophomore Greg Peters (Belmont, St. Vincent) grabbed a game high 13 rebounds including 8 offensive boards. NU shot 43% from 2-point FG range and 44.8% from the 3-point line (13 for 29) and out rebounded Concordia 45-32 including 20 offensive rebounds.

"I'm happy for our guys who have persevered through this tough stretch and it's good to see them rewarded with a win tonight," commented head coach John Van Dyke. "They're a young, coachable group gaining experience with each game."

 Concordia (7-16, 2-12 CCC) was led by Steven Vaughan (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.) and his 22 points and 6 rebounds. Junior Matt Ochs (Clackamas, Ore.) added 14 points and freshman guard Gage Aker dropped in 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for the Cavaliers. The Cavs shot 44% from 2-point range but were held to 23% shooting (4 for 17) from beyond the 3-point arc. CU shot 80% from the free throw line.
 
Northwest U. will host the Evergreen State College on Tuesday, February 3 and Concordia returns to Portland to play Eastern Oregon on February 6 at home. Both games are slated for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
