Oregon Tech Gets Sweep Over Otters
SEASIDE, Calif. – Playing in steady rain most of the day, the Oregon Tech baseball team swept a doubleheader over host Cal State Monterey Bay today at the Otters Baseball Field. Tech won the opener 5-3 and the nightcap 11-6.
Chad Trevisan picked up the win for Tech, throwing the final four innings in relief of hitless baseball and striking out one batter. Zach Earle, Ryson Mauricio and Cory Spires all went 2-4 at the plate. Earle and Mauricio picked up an RBI, while Spires drove in two runs.
Oregon Tech opened up the game with three runs in the top of the first inning. The Otters tied the game at three in the bottom of the second. OIT took the lead in the fifth inning on a home run by leadoff batter Ryson Mauricio, which proved to be the game winner. The Owls added an insurance run in the seventh on a home run by Zach Earle.
In game two, Oregon Tech once again jumped out in front, this time with two runs in the first. The Otters tied the game in the bottom of the second at 2-2. Tech plated two more runs in the third, only to see CSUMB come back with two more of their own to tie the game at 4-4. Both teams plated a single run in the fourth. The Owls posted three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take an 11-5 lead. CSUMB attempted a rally in the sixth, but could only push a single run across, as the Owls took game two by the final of 11-6.
Quinn Hummel was 3-3 at the plate and drove in two runs for the Owls. Ryan Smith finished with two RBI and two hits. Trent Smith, Spires and Mauricio got a hit each, while Spires drove in two runs and Smith and Mauricio one RBI. Chris Thomas went six innings, scattered 10 hits and tallied seven strikeouts to get the win. Cory Stratton pitched the final inning and gave up no hits.
Oregon Tech plays at Fresno Pacific on Monday in a single nine inning game beginning at noon.
