Cavs Belt 5 HRs in 13-8 Win Over George Fox
PORTLAND, Ore. –Concordia catcher Tommy Whalen collected a pair of home runs and six RBI while Cavalier starter Ross Conway pitched seven innings in a 13-8 win at George Fox on Friday afternoon.
With the result, Concordia improved to 4-2 on the year while George Fox dropped to 2-3.
The Cavs wasted little time in getting on the board with three runs in the first and four in the second to stake an early 7-1 lead. CU connected on four singles in the first and used the long ball in the second with Whalen smacking a three-run homer to left field in the second to highlight the early eruption.
J.J. Berg stroked his second homer of the year in the fourth while Jimmy Rudig and Whalen posted back-to-back jacks in the seventh for the team’s third and fourth homer of the day. Going 3-for-6 on the day, Ben Lanier hit a solo shot over the fence in the ninth for CU’s 13th run of the game.
The first three batters in the Concordia lineup combined for nine runs and 10 RBI after going 9-of-17 at the plate. Whalen recorded a four-hit day with a 4-of-5 performance.
Ross Conway earned his second win of the season with seven innings of work. Conway allowed four runs and issued two walks while dodging the Bruins bats on six occasions to eclipse his five strikeout performance from last week.
Nick Bratney took the loss for George Fox, allowing seven runs (five earned) as the Cavs outhit the Bruins 17-to-10.
Concordia returns to action later in the day as they travel to McMinnville, Ore., for a clash against the University of Puget Sound at the Jim Doran Auto Group Classic.
