Concordia Scores in Seventh, Eighth to Hold Off Azusa Pacific 2-1

MEDFORD, Ore.—Despite outhitting Azusa Pacific 13-3, it took until the eighth inning for Concordia to scrape together the winning run with a 2-1 victory over the Cougars on Saturday morning.

With the win, CU improved to 9-0 on the year while APU dropped to 7-6. Concordia will conclude its action at the Southern Oregon Tournament later in the afternoon as it faces Pacific University.
With CU starter Danielle Pulfrey facing two batter over the minimum through the first six innings, the Cavs finally took advantage of their aces performance with a run in the top of the seventh to end the scoreless game.

Becca Gawlista got the attack going with a single to centerfield and was immediately advanced to second following a sacrifice bunt by Denise Benedict. Kayla Vickaryous would push Gawlista to third on a shot to right field to set up an RBI single by Nicole Illias.

APU starter Erin Halma would limit the damage with a fly out to right, ending the side with a 1-0 deficit.
Leading off the bottom of the seventh, Halma helped her own cause with a lead-off double. After a successful sacrifice by Natalie Mickelson, Halma would round third and advance home on a Camille Hundley single to right.

The Cavs scored another go-ahead run in the top of the eighth with back-to-back two-out singles by Gawlista and Benedict to get Shalina Morris home for the team’s second run.

Not letting another opportunity to seal the win slip away, Pulfrey retired the Cougars in four batters, allowing a walk while getting a strikeout looking to end the contest.

Pulfrey compiled eight innings of work on the mound, striking out 11 while issuing two walks. Halma was charged with one of the two CU runs and allowed 13 hits against two strikeouts.

Five-Run First Propels Pacific Past Cavaliers

MEDFORD, Ore.—Pacific received a pair of home runs in the bottom of the first to stake an early lead while starter Chelsey Chamberlain held Concordia to two hits for a 5-0 win on Saturday.
With the result, Pacific improved to 4-2 on the year and Concordia dropped its first game of the year for a 9-1 overall mark.

After a leadoff walk, Chamberlain gave herself a boost with a two-run shot for a quick 2-0 lead. Kristen Croxford and Brooke Fogwell would post back-to-back singles before another bomb, this time by Ashley Billingsley, to give Pacific a larger cushion to work with.

The extra runs would prove to be unnecessary as Chamberlain posted 1-2-3 innings on four occasions and only allowed one CU baserunner past second past as she cruised to a two-hit shutout.
Samantha Daline recorded a single to leadoff the second and would reach third via a Boxer error, but failed to score as Chamberlain ended the frame with a strikeout. Shalina Morris led off the fifth for CU’s only other hit of the game.

Danielle Pulfrey, coming on in relief, pitched the final 5 1/3 innings, allowing a single hit and three walks against 10 strikeouts. Chamberlain picked up eight strikeout victims on the road to the shutout win.
Concordia returns to action on March 4 when it hosts George Fox at Delta Park. Opening pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Portland.
