Schultz, Makinde Post NAIA Indoor Qualifiers at Vandal Open
MOSCOW, Idaho –With the bulk of the team competing on Saturday at Idaho State University, the Concordia track and field squads got off to an excellent start to its weekend of competition with a pair of NAIA Indoor National Championship marks.
On the track, Eunice Makinde reached the standard in the 60-meter hurdles twice in less than an hour. After eclipsing the barrier of 9.20 seconds in the short sprint with a 9.12 in the preliminary round, Makine came back and matched the ‘A’ standard I the finals, placing seventh overall. Her 9.12 not only set a new personal record but established a new Concordia record as well.
In the prelim round of the flat 60, teammate Stephanie Persaud came within a tenth of a second of the provisional standard by posting an 8.04. The time would tie for the meet’s eighth-best of the meet, but Persaud would be bumped from an attempt at lowering her time as a judge’s decision left her as a spectator for the women’s final.
Already ranked No. 5 in the early NAIA performance list in the shot, Katherine Tripp increased her season best by nearly a foot with a 46-11 heave in a third- place showing. The toss would crush Tripp’s personal and school record, previously set in 2007 at 42-7.
Greg Schultz took the team’s second auto mark with a 58-0 in the men’s weight throw. Although well shy of his own career best of 60-5 3/4 set last year at the NAIA Indoor Championships, the All-American bested the ‘A’ standard of qualification by more than five feet.
Curtis Parrish narrowly missed provisional status in the 400 with a 50.06, crossing .08 back of the ‘B’ standard. Cordero Cisneros covered 800 meters in 1:57.65 and Eric Burck finished the mile in 4:24.38 to also flirt provisional qualifiers in their respective races.
The Cavs will stay overnight in Idaho to continue competition at the Kibbie Activity Center with the Runners’ Soul Open beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.
