Bases Loaded Double Play Preserves CU Win over Seattle
SEATTLE—Holding on to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Concordia got Seattle to swing into a double play with the bases loaded to end the game and preserve a 3-2 win in non-conference action at Logan Field.
With the win, Concordia improved to 11-1 on the season while Seattle dropped to 6-9. The two teams will play a doubleheader in Seattle on Saturday with the opening pitch set for 11 a.m.
The Cavaliers scored three runs in the top of the second with Robin Gawlista cracking an RBI single to center directly before sister Becca Gawlista smashed a triple to the outfield to send a pair of runs across the plate.
Seattle managed single runs in the third and the fifth inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Jodie Schmehr got an RBI off a single to third base in the third while Jamie Foote led off the fifth with a solo shot to left center in the fifth inning.
The Redhawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh to mount the scoring threat. Following a leadoff walk, Foote moved Peterson to second on a sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning. CU countered by intentionally walking Lisa Hill and nearly saw the plan backfire as Lauren Berin followed with a single to left, advancing the runners just a single base.
CU starter Danielle Pulfrey would quell the danger in the next at bat by getting Kate Zender to groundout back to Pulfrey where there junior hurler fired to the plate for the second out and Cavalier catcher Nicole Illias completed the game-ending double play with a toss to first.
Pulfrey allowed seven hits in the contest to pick up her seventh win of the year. Pulfrey struck out six and issued six walks while allowing the two runs. Seattle starter Hannah Klein lasted 1.1 innings before being relieved by Kelsey Reynolds. After getting three runs and two hits off of Klein, the Cavs were held to just two more hits over the final 5.2 innings.
