Jason Barry tossed a three-hitter in Game 2 win over L-C
Barry Helps Coyotes to Split with #7 L-C State
CALDWELL, Idaho - Jason Barry tossed a three-hitter and Dane McGrady hit a three-run home run that proved to be the difference, as The College of Idaho split a doubleheader with No. 7 ranked Lewis-Clark State, losing the opener 11-7, but winning Game 2, 3-2, at Wolfe Field.
Barry, making his first appearance of the season, was in command, not walking a batter and striking out three, as the Yotes won for the first time against the Warriors (11-6) in Caldwell since 2001. Of the three hits he allowed, two were infield singles.
L-C got on the board in the first, as Brian Ward legged out an infield single, but Diego Robles' throw to first was wild, allowing Kyle Melton to score from second. The visitors would tack on a run in the second without a hit, as Paul Martin was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a ground out, then scored on a wild throw on a ground ball by Danny Aguiano.
The Yotes (11-6) would get to starter Tyler Knigge in the third, as Robles singled to lead off the frame and Brad Carlsen walked. That brought up McGrady, who hit his first home run in 319 collegiate at bats, to give the Yotes the lead. Barry took over from there, allowing just two L-C base runners the rest of the way for the win.
Carlsen went 2-for-2 in the win for the Yotes, while Dustin Willis tossed three-plus innings of shutout relief for the Warriors.
Game 1 saw the Warriors take advantage of four C of I errors to jump out to an 11-1 lead after seven innings, as Melton went 4-for-6 with an RBI and Sean Halton went 3-for-4 with four RBI, including a two-run double in the fifth inning.
However, the Yotes would make it interesting in the ninth, as RBI singles from Carlsen and Robles, along with a Cody Brubaker bases loaded walk brought the tying run to the plate. But Nick Masters got McGrady to ground out to end the game.
Matt Stabelfeld was solid for L-C, going seven innings, allowing just four hits and two runs - including a Matt Mejia solo home run, part of a 2-for-5 game.
The rubber game of the series is tomorrow afternoon at Noon.
