Doornink, Blum Help Corban Sweep Concordia
WILSONVILLE, Ore.–Corban starter Tyler Doornink pitched a complete-game shutout to defeat Concordia 3-0 in NAIA West Region action played at Wilsonville High School on Saturday.
With the win, Corban moved to 8-14 on the year and 6-9 in West Region contests while CU dropped to 10-14 overall and 5-9 in league action.
With back-to-back doubles by Russ Johnston and Kyle Taylor in the top of the second, Corban was able to take an early lead off of Concordia starter Steven Taft. Te run would be all the Warriors would need as Doornink allowed just six hits over the full nine innings for the complete-game shutout.
The Warriors added two run in the eighth with three straight two-out hits. Craig Spicer started the attack with a single and immediately scored on a Steven Blum double. Nate Hiebert gave Corban its third run with a single to center field to drive Blum home.
The Cavs only batted more than four in an inning once with five players sent to the plate in the seventh. CU had three lead-off baserunners but did not advance a runner past second base in the game.
Doornink struck out three and did not give up a walk. Taft went eight innings for the Cavaliers, allowing nine hits while striking out five. Johnston went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and a run to lead the Warrior offense. The six CU hits came from six different players.
Blum Slam Sinks Cavs
WILSONVILLE, Ore.—With one swing in the first inning, Steven Blum gave Corban a 4-0 lead as the Warriors defeated Concordia 5-3 for a doubleheader sweep at Wilsonville High School on Saturday.
The Warriors shutout the Cavaliers 3-0 in the opener to move to 9-14 on the year while Concordia dropped to 10-15.
After a leadoff flyball, Corban’s Schmidt reached via an error at first base and would remain on the basepaths with the help of an error at shortstop. Instead of potentially ending the inning with a double play, a walk to Johnston in the next at bat set up the bases loaded situation for Blum
After the Blum blast to left-center, CU starter Ben Rue would get outs from the next two batters to retire the side.
Immediately making up for the error in the first, CU’s Kyle Schneider drilled a double to center to leadoff in the home half of the first. Schneider would come around to score moments later with an Odie Hollingshed triple down the right field line, Jon Houts followed wit an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Scoring would be at a premium the rest of the way as the Cavs plated a runner in the fourth to come within one, but Corban would answer in the top of the sixth for the final 5-3 score.
The Cavs had several opportunities to add to its total throughout the game with runners stranded at third in the third, fifth and seventh innings.
Trevor Winsor and Quinn McNab combined to pitch the seven innings with Winsor picking up the win with five innings of work and McNab getting credit for the save after getting the final six outs.
Rue went the full seven, allowing five hits while striking out four Warriors.
Schneider went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs to lead the Cavs while Houts got three hits in three charged at bats.
Concordia returns to action on March 24 when it travels to St. Martin’s for a non-conference road game in Lacey, Wash., Opening pitch is set for 3 p.m.
