Brad Carlsen's three-run homer helps Yotes split with UBC
Coyotes Split with No. 14 Ranked UBC
CALDWELL, Idaho - Brad Carlsen hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, helping The College of Idaho to a split with the University of British Columbia, losing the opener, 8-3, but winning the nightcap, 4-2, at Wolfe Field.
After Jon Syrnyk put No. 14 ranked UBC (17-4, 11-2 NAIA West) up in the top of the sixth with a towering home run, back-to-back singles by Cody Brubaker and Diego Robles set the table for Carlsen, who crushed a 2-1 Taylor King pitch over the right-centerfield wall for the winning runs.
Jared Arehart got the win for the Coyotes (12-8, 11-2), allowing just four hits and striking out five, with Brubaker and Carslen each with two hits.
In the opener, Scott Webster got the T-Birds on the board with a solo homer in the fifth, with Ben Pilgrim adding a two-run single in the sixth to make it 3-0. UBC would tack on five runs in the seventh, including a grand slam homer from Syrnyk.
Mark Hardy was dominant in the win, throwing seven shutout innings without a walk and ten strikeouts.
The two teams will complete their four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
