EUGENE, Ore.–A week after competing at the 2009 NAIA Indoor Championships, the Concordia track and field program successfully started their outdoor campaign with 10 NAIA qualifiers at the Oregon Preview held at Hayward Field on Saturday.
“Considering we didn’t bring many middle-distance and distance competitors we had a great meet,” Concordia head coach Randy Dalzell said. “We are already way ahead of where we have been in the past at this point.”
On the men’s side, Curtis Parris (400 hurdles), Nik Kay (discus), Paul Roshau (javelin) and Greg Schultz (hammer) recorded automatic qualifying performances.
Kay posted a winning throw of 172-11 in the discus, more than 20 feet better than the closest competitor, while Roshau and Kay posted near career-record marks in their respective discipline with Roshau taking third place and Schultz second place.
Roshau unleashed a 214-6 in the javelin, just 10 feet shy of his career best set last year in At the NAIA Outdoor Championships. Schultz best throw of the day was measured in 192-2 which dropped roughly 15 feet shy of his all-time best wich was also set last season at the NAIA championships.
The final auto qualifier for the men, Parrish crossed the line in 53.88 to nip the ‘A’ standard by .02. In the same race, CU’s Jordan Hamblen finished in 55.59 to tease the provisional barrier of 55.30 in his first race of the outdoor season.
Katherine Tripp led the Cavalier women with a pair of auto marks. Tripp set a school record in the shot with a 46-10 1/4 effort to easily surmount the 42-6 ‘A’ standard. Tripp also qualified in the discus with a 138-6.
One inch back with a 138-5, Emily Redmayne-Titley hit the ‘A’ standard dead on to give the Cavs a pair of qualifiers in the discus. CU also picked up two automatic standards in the javelin with Lauren Sexton (136-6) and Aria Nojima (133-5) each eclipsing the standard.
Nearly giving the Cavs its 10th auto mark, Eunice Makinde had to settle for a provisional effort in the 100 hurdles with a 15.04. Makinde’s time, the second best in school history, was .14 behind the ‘A’ standard of 14.90.
Two school records were set on Saturday as Tripp’s shot put defeated her own outdoor best while Chris Wilson established a new mark in the men’s 110 hurdles with a time of 15.37.
