Coyotes Sweep Twinbill From No. 14 British Columbia
CALDWELL, Idaho - Alex O'Brien's two-out, pinch hit two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning capped a six-run rally, as The College of Idaho swept a doubleheader from the University of British Columbia, 4-2 and 6-5, at Wolfe Field.
With the wins, the Coyotes (14-8, 13-2 NAIA West) move two games ahead of the No.14 ranked Thunderbirds in the NAIA West standings.
Trailing 5-0 in the sixth of a seven inning Game 2, the Yotes sent 11-men to the plate. Izaac Garsez walked with the bases loaded to get the Yotes on the board, and after a fielders choice scored a second run, Kyle Douglas roped a two-run single to center to pull C of I within a run. Following a walk, O'Brien hit a 1-2 pitch down the left field line to give the Yotes the lead.
Chad Yeggy made it stand up, striking out Jon Syrnyk with two on to close out the win. Douglas went 3-for-4 for the Yotes, while Alex White and Greg Densem each had two hits for the T-Birds.
UBC (17-6, 11-4) jumped out to the early lead with a three-run second, thanks to two C of I errors. They'd tack on single runs in the third and fourth, including a Bob Foerester solo home run.
Game 1 saw the Yotes break a scoreless tie in the fourth on a Brad Carlsen two-run single, and after UBC cut the lead in half on a Ben Torrie sacrifice fly, added two more in the fifth on a Dane McGrady RBI double and a Douglas RBI single.
Jake Bottari and Ben Rosen made it stand up, limiting UBC to just five hits. Bottari went seven innings allowing just three hits, with Rosen recording the final six outs for his first save.
Torrie had two hits for the T-Birds, while Douglas went 2-for-3 for the Yotes.
The C of I returns to action next weekend, hosting Patten University in a four-game series.
