ASHLAND, ORE. - Freshman pitcher Jordyn Kurtz kept the Concordia bats at bay and the Southern Oregon offense did just enough as the Raiders scored a 2-1, 6-2 sweep of the 14th-ranked Cavaliers today at University Field.

The Raiders are now 4-9 overall and 2-0 in Cascade Conference play. Concordia dropped to 13-3 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

In the opener, Kurtz and Concordia ace Danielle Pulfrey battled through the first five innings before the Raiders broke through in the sixth.

Senior Ricci Coultas walked to start the Raider rally and junior Meghan Laughlin’s ground ball to third turned into error, allowing Coultas to score and give SOU a 1-0 lead. Another error scored Laughlin to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.

Concordia fired back in the top of the seven as Tina Garcia doubled and scored to cut the lead to one, but the Cavaliers couldn’t get the game-tying run in.

Kurtz struck out six and spread out eight Concordia hits in the victory. Danielle Stratton had SOU’s lone hit, a single in the sixth.

In the nightcap, the Raiders struck early, scoring two in the first with base hits by senior Strohm Fouty and a triple by Laughlin.

In the fifth, SOU put four more on the board as Laughlin started the rally with a single to left and junior Justine Fulton drove in a pair of runs with a 2-run single. SOU’s rally was helped by three Concordia errors.

Concordia put a scare in the Raiders in the top of the seventh, loading the bases and scoring two runs before Kurtz worked her way out of the jam.

Kurtz again allowed eight hits in the Game 2 victory and struck out four.

Fouty, Laughlin and Fulton all had two hits for the Raiders.

SOU returns to action Saturday when they host Corban at 11 a.m.
