Kurtz Leads Raiders To Split With Warriors
ASHLAND, ORE. - Southern Oregon freshman pitcher Jordyn Kurtz tied a school record for strikeouts in a game and hit a home run as the Raiders split a doubleheader with Corban today at University Field.
Southern Oregon won the opener 8-4 and then dropped the nightcap 5-4.
Southern Oregon is now 5-10 overall and 3-1 in Cascade Conference play. Corban is now 15-11 overall and 3-1 in conference action.
In the opener, Kurtz did it all for the Raiders.
After striking out seven Warriors in the first three innings, Kurtz put the Raiders up 2-0 with a two-run home run deep over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the third.
The Raiders made it 6-0 in the fourth, sparked by a two-run triple by senior Joelle Riekeman.
Corban made it a game with a pair of runs in the fifth and the top of the seventh, but Kurtz ended the Corban threat with her 13th strikeout to end the game.
The 13 strikeouts tied the school record for strikeouts in a game and set a new University Field mark. Kurtz only walked three during the victory.
Kurtz, Megann Laughlin, Katie Moy and Danielle Stratton all had two hits for the Raiders.
In the nightcap, Corban jumped on Kurtz for a Jessica Schell home run and four runs (all unearned) in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead.
SOU responded with singles by Strohm Fouty, Christa Simon, Laughlin, Moy and Bailey Price to cut the lead to 4-3 after four innings.
SOU freshman pitcher Amy Seliger, who replaced Kurtz in the fourth, allowed just one run on two hits and struck out six over the final four innings to give the Raiders a chance in the bottom of the seventh.
Trailing 5-3, junior Justine Fulton led off SOU’s seventh with a single and ended up on third on an error. Stratton scored Fulton with a sacrifice fly, but a pair of ground ball outs by Fouty and Simon ended the game.
Simon led the SOU offense with three hits, while Laughlin, Price and Fouty had two hits each.
SOU returns to action Tuesday when they host Simpson University. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
