CCC Players of the Week Named in Track, Softball, Baseball, Golf

The following student-athletes have been named Cascade Collegiate Conference Players of the Week for the period March 23-29:

Male Track Athlete of the Week
Southern Oregon’s Cameron Kreuz, a senior from Portland, Ore., remained undefeated in 2009 by winning the 800 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Kreuz clocked a time of 1:52.68 to earn an NAIA “A” qualifying mark in the event.

Male Field Athlete of the Week
Concordia’s Eric Whalen, a freshman from Tualatin, Ore., competing in his first outdoor meet of the season, recorded a throw of 205-1 in the javelin to earn an NAIA automatic qualifying mark. Whalen placed fourth overall in the collegiate division of the Stanford Invitational. His throw ranks third all-time at Concordia and easily bested the NAIA “A” qualifying mark of 190-4.

Female Track Athlete of the Week
Concordia’s Andria Scheese, a junior from Oregon City, Ore., broke the school record in the 1,500 and notched an NAIA automatic qualifying mark with a time of 4:38.26 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Scheese placed second overall, finishing behind Oregon State’s Casey Masterson. Scheese broke the school record by nearly 13 seconds.

Female Field Athlete of the Week
Concordia’s Dominique Jacoy, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., improved her school record in the heptathlon by totaling 3,853 points at the Linfield Multi-Events in McMinnville. Jacoy, who finished third overall in the event, set two personal records during the two-day competition.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
College of Idaho’s Jody Zillner, a 5-10 junior pitcher from Emmett, Idaho, recorded 15 strikeouts in a one-hit victory over Northwest Christian, then struck out both batters she faced in relief in the nightcap to pick up her first save of the season.

Softball Player of the Week
Corban’s Jennifer Kollaer, a 5-8 sophomore from Albany, Ore., helped Corban to a 5-1 record last week. She batted .526 with 10 hits in 19 at-bats, including three doubles, two homers, and eight runs batted in.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Concordia’s Brett Hawley, a 6-2 senior from Bellevue, Wash., picked up the Cavs’ lone win of the week with 6 2/3 innings of work against University of British Columbia on Saturday. Hawley struck out six batters en route to the 3-2 victory.

Baseball Player of the Week
College of Idaho’s Luke Howarth, a 5-11 senior center fielder from Boise, Idaho, recorded his second career five-hit game on Sunday vs. Patten. In a four-game sweep of Patten, Howard was 9 of 15 at the plate, with nine runs, one double, two homers and three RBI’s. He also stole three bases.

Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week
Northwest Christian’s Justin Ahrens, a junior from Eugene, Ore., led the Beacons to a third-place finish at the Cavalier Spring Classic. Ahrens shot a 2-under 70 in the second round to come back from a four-shot deficit and force a first-place tie in the event.

Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week
Concordia’s Kim Tilton, a senior from Pleasanton, Calif., placed second overall behind teammate Lindsay Aho as the Cavaliers took the team crown by 39 strokes over No. 15 Victoria at the Cavalier Spring Classic. Tilton’s two-round total of 157 marked a four-stroke improvement over her career best for a two-round tournament.
