SOU's Joelle Riekeman led the Raider offense in the sweep over Simpson
Raiders Stay Hot, Sweep Red Hawks
ASHLAND, ORE. - The Southern Oregon offense came alive today as the Raiders swept Simpson University 11-6, 10-0 at University Field.
The Raiders, winners of five of six, improved to 7-10 on the season. Simpson dropped to 19-19 overall.
After Simpson scored a lone run to in the top of the first of Game 1, the SOU bats came alive.
In the second, SOU plated two on an two-run single by senior Joelle Riekeman. Senior Ricci Coultas singled home a run and junior Bailey Price drove home a run with a fielder’s choice to give SOU a 4-1 lead after three innings.
Riekeman had an RBI triple in the fourth and junior Justine Fulton had an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to 6-4.
Simpson came back with in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-5 before SOU exploded in the bottom of the sixth.
The Raiders scored five runs on three hits and two Simpson errors to take control.
SOU’s 11 runs were more than enough to give freshman pitcher Amy Seliger her first collegiate victory.
Riekeman led the SOU offense with three hits and three RBI. Junior Danielle Stratton had two hits and Price had three RBI.
In the second game, the Raiders put the game away with one inning.
In the bottom of the third, SOU scored nine runs on seven hits. The rally featured doubles by Meghan Laughlin and Price and triples by Christa Simon and Laughlin.
SOU had nine hits in the nightcap, with Laughlin and Simon having two each.
Freshman pitcher Jordyn Kurtz blanked the Red Hawks in the second game, allowing just four hits and striking out four.
SOU returns to Cascade Conference play Saturday when they host Northwest Christian. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 11 a.m.
