Jody Zillner fired three-hit shutout at NCAA Division I Idaho State
Lady Yotes Blank NCAA Division I Idaho State, 8-0
BOISE, Idaho - Jody Zillner fired a three-hit shutout, as The College of Idaho softball team stunned NCAA Division I opponent, Idaho State, 8-0, in a mercy-rule ended contest to close Day 1 of the State of Idaho Tournament
The junior transfer did not allow a runner to reach third in the game, walking just one, and striking out four - extending her scoreless inning streak to 28 innings.
The Coyotes (4-5) got on the board in the third, as former ISU star Heather Dixon's bases loaded infield single made it 1-0. Dani Villyard followed with an RBI single and Haley Butcher hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
The C of I would bust the game open with a five-run fifth inning, taking advantage of a pair of ISU (2-9) errors. Butcher plated a run with an infield single, Dixon would score on a dropped throw home on a fielder's choice attempt, and Caylin LePire would recorded a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-0. Nikki Shumway provided the big blow, capping the inning with a two-run single.
It marked just the second time this season that the Bengals have been defeated by the mercy-rule - with defending NCAA Division I national champion, Arizona State, providing the other loss. It was the fifth time in program history that the Yotes have defeated a D-I team - and the third time in seven meetings that The C of I has toppled ISU.
Today's opener against Boise State was postponed, due to an overnight snowstorm that dropped two inches of snow at Mountain Cove Field. It is uncertain whether the game will be rescheduled.
The Coyotes will take tomorrow off to host their annual Dinner-Auction, then return to the diamond for the final day of the Tournament on Sunday, meeting Boise State at 10 a.m. and a rematch with ISU at Noon.
