Freshman Joey Duwe tied his career-low round today at the George Fox Invitational.
Duwe & Landis Lead Corban at George Fox Invitational
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Freshman Joey Duwe (Kingston, Wash.) and sophomore Steve Landis (Gladstone, Ore.) placed second and third individually, as Corban's men's golf team finished second at the George Fox Invitational Saturday afternoon at Trysting Tree Golf Course.
"Today's round was not easy," commented assistant coach Mark Colachico. "Even though Trysting Tree is a wide-open course that a lot of players can go low on, the weather became a factor as the temperature and wind made things a lot tougher and pushed the scores higher than originally expected. The guys really dug down deep and showed how well they can play in just the second tournament of the spring season."
Duwe tied a career-low after carding an even-par round of 72, while Landis shot his second straight round of 4-over 76 as the duo both brought home medals.
As a team, Corban posted its fourth lowest round of the season thanks to a combined 21-over 309 to finish as the tournament’s runner-up behind NCAA Division III Pacific. The Boxers from Forest Grove shot a combined 10-over 298 led by medalist Max Bonk, who was three strokes off the course record with a 7-under 65 that included nine birdies.
Duwe was the only other player in red numbers, as the first-year Warrior opened his round with 10 straight pars before registering a pair of bogeys on the par 4 315-yard 11th hole and par 3 143-yard 13th hole. Over his final five holes, Duwe went two-under thanks to birdies on the par 5 538-yard 15th hole and par 3 195-yard 17th hole.
After finishing fourth a week ago, Landis moved up one spot in the individual results and ended one stroke better than Pacific’s Brian Pan. The second-year Warrior recorded birdies on the par 5 512-yard 5th hole and par 4 414-yard closing 18th hole en route to his third place finish.
Senior Nathan Furumasu (Gladstone, Ore.) finished in a three-way tie for ninth thanks to an 8-over 80 that included an opening birdie on the par 4 417-yard 1st hole before going one-under par on the par 4 368-yard 8th hole and registering a chip-in birdie from 30 yards out on the par 4 414-yard closing 18th hole.
Freshman Boe Brodhun (Port Angeles, Wash.) rounded out the Warriors’ team scoring with a 9-over 81 that was good enough for a three-way tie for 12th place. The first-year Warrior birdied the par 4 399-yard 3rd hole and then registered pars on seven of his final 10 holes.
Individually, freshman Chris Dudley (Boise, Idaho) and junior Tyler Dean (Klamath Falls, Ore.) completed Corban’s roster with scores of 11-over 83 and 19-over 91. Dudley finished in a two-way tie for 19th place, while Dean ended 22nd individually.
Behind Pacific’s tournament-winning score, Corban was 11 strokes better than Pacific’s second team (32-over 320) and 24 strokes ahead of tournament-host George Fox (45-over 333) en route to earning its second straight runner-up result.
Corban will return to the links on Monday, March 16th, as part of the one-day, 36-hole Willamette Invitational beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Creekside Golf Club in Salem.
