LA GRANDE, Ore. - On February 13 the Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team dawned pink uniforms in their 74-65 win over Northwest University in an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer.
The event was put together by the Mountaineer women's basketball team and the EOU Student Health Center in conjunction with the WBCA's Pink Zone initiative.
Quinn Coliseum was filled with Mountaineer faithful sporting "Wear Pink Get Aware" T-shirts while the lobby flowed with volunteers providing breast health information.
That night the Mounties not only raised awareness&.. they raised money. Today OHSU employee and registered Angie Abel and EOU Athletic Director Rob Cashell donated a check for $1,500 to the Union County CHD to help provide mammograms to uninsured women in our county.
Abel and Cashell co-wrote a grant to increase the size of the event on campus. They were awarded a mini grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the amount of $1,600.
The money helped pay for the pink t-shirts that were given to the first 150 students arriving at the game. Additional shirts were sold to fans. The Komen Foundation money also helped pay for the marketing and promotion of the event including the purchase of $500 worth of prizes that were given away during the game to help increase attendance.
