BELLINGHAM, Wash.—Despite most of the runners on the team competing outside of their specialty events, the Concordia track and field team recorded second-place team finishes at the Ralph Vernacchia Team Meet hosted by Western Washington University on Friday.

The Cavalier women tallied 95 points while the men totaled 85 points with both squads placing second to the host Vikings of WWU.

Concordia added six new NAIA qualifiers while five new school records were established.

On the track a trio of Cavs posted NAIA qualifiers on the women’s side with Samantha Robert leading the way with a school-record 38:22.44 in the 10,000, cutting more than two minutes off the school record while earning the NAIA ‘A’ standard. Trialing Robert, Alice Taylor placed third overall with a 39:04.18 to reach the NAIA provisional standard.

Also reaching the NAIA ‘B’ standard, Lauren Moran set a school record in the steeplechase with a 11:38.42, just missing the automatic barrier of 11:33.00.

The Cavs placed three inside the top six in the men’s hammer with Greg Schultz improving his NAIA-leading mark to a school-record 207-8, adding four inches to his career best. CU added two more qualifiers in the event with Nik Kay and Matt Webster eclipsing the provisional barrier. Kay placed fifth overall with a 165-1 and Webster was measured in 159-7 for sixth place.

Freshman Sharayah Kenady reestablished the school record in the women’s hammer, launching the orb 166-10 to boost her all-time best by more than seven feet.

The final automatic qualifier of the day came from Jesse Staub in the discus with a 19-foot personal record of 159-9 while the fifth school record performance came from Katherine Tripp with a 49-0 3/4 toss in the shot put to enhance the all-time school best by 19 inches.

Seven CU athletes took home individual championships. Leon Carl matched Tripp with a win in the shot put with a season-best 52-4 heave. Nik Kay captured the men’s discus, while Emily Redmayne-Titley won the women’s discus to lead a 1-2-3 CU sweep in the event. Schultz’s school record was good for a meet-best mark in the hammer and Lauren Sexton and Aria Nojima took the top two spots in the women’s javelin. Nojima added more than 14 feet to her season best with a 147-8 toss.

Daniel Scheetz tied for the meet-best in the high jump with a 6-0 3/4 clearance. Teammate Trevor Schwanz also cleared the height for a personal record to finish in third place. On the track, Curtis Parrish took first in the 110 hurdles with a 15.55.
