Cavs Take 11 Titles at Lewis and Clark Invite
PORTLAND, Ore.—The Concordia track and field program captured 11 individual titles and added six NAIA provisional qualifiers at the Lewis and Clark Invitational held on Saturday.
The Cavs swept the men’s and women’s shot, hammer and javelin for six of their 11 titles. Leon Carl and Katherine Tripp took the shot put crowns, Greg Schultz and Sharayah Kenady won the hammer and Eric Whalen and Lauren Sexton posted wins in the javelin.
Finishing in second place to a teammate, freshman Eric Whalen recorded a career-best in the shot put with a 50-4 1/2 throw to reach NAIA provisional status while Michael Wright replicated the feat with a third-place result in the hammer with a 165-6 effort.
In the jumps, Jordan Trump cleared 15-7 in the pole vault to nab a provisional qualifier and Joyce Oniah soared 17-10 3/4 in the long jump, the best mark to date in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, to reach the NAIA ‘B’ qualifying standard.
On the track, Chris Wilson broke his own school record in the 110-meter hurdles with a meet-winning 15.23 and Jessy Brown clocked a 1:54.72 to win the 800. Both Brown and Wilson’s times constituted NAIA provisional performances.
Other event winners on Saturday were: DeAndre Burton in the triple jump, Jordan Hamblen in the 400 hurdles, Nik Kay in the discus and Erika Schmid in the high jump.
Concordia returns to competition on April 24-25 at the Oregon Relays held at the University of Oregon. The Cavs will also compete at the CU/Mt. Hood Invitational on April 25.
