EOU's Kimmy Moore finished first in the 100 meter hurdles today.
LA GRANDE, Ore. - The 2009 Mountaineer Invite started in La Grande on Thursday and Friday with the Heptathlon/Decathlon portion of the meet, under pretty good conditions most of the time.
The Dec saw Lucas Ohmes record an overall score that should easily get the 3 time All American into the NAIA National meet the end of May. Ivan Staeheli and Chris Hoppie recorded marks that will often advance to the 16 man field at the national meet as well.
Rounding out competition for the men, was Asa Miller in his first ever Decathlon, with a very solid first time effort for the freshman from Spray, OR.
On the Women's side of things, Kimmy Moore recorded the fourth best mark in school history to record a score that will almost always make the 16 woman Heptathlon field at the national meet. Moore was joined by three teammates all with very solid marks. Three of the Mountie Women were competing in their first Heptathlon (Moore, Sam Boyd and Jessianne Heley). The fourth, Erin Ontko, had a very solid day, finishing right around her life time best.
Joined by Northwest Nazarene University and Treasure Valley Community College under ideal conditions for a track meet, the Mounties had a number of very strong performances, highlighted by a National Qualifier and school record.
Top EOU performance of the day for the throws was Sophomore Becky Unger who threw a life time PR in the Discus for the win (one of 11 wins for the EOU Women's squad during the weekend).
On the Men's side, Quinten Baxter continued to throw well, winning the Shot Put (one of seven wins for the Men during the meet), setting a season's best in the Discus and just missing the NAIA Automatic standard in the hammer.
The EOU distance squad had a very solid day, running 1-2 in the men's 1500 (Forrest Lumpry and Carlos Quintana- both PR's) and the Steeplechase (Cam Starner and Terry Johnsen) and Doug Benson winning the 800. Other Men's distance highlights actually came in the sprints where 800 meter specialist Andrew Perri won the 400 and Fernando Morales placed third.
For the women, Alma Garcilazo dropped down and won the 400, Sara Bates won the 800 (both with PR marks) and Katie Clapp won the 5,000.
The Female sprinters absolutely tore it up on the track today, with Orie Gamez winning both the 100 and 200, leading a 1, 2, 3 sweep in the 200. Virtually every female sprinter set either season's best or lifetime best toady. Kimmy Moore came back to win the 100 hurdles the day after winning the heptathlon with a season's best&and had to run it twice due to a timing error! The women's 4 x 100 was very close to a school record, despite the other timing error of the day to win by a wide margin.
For the men, Drew wise continues to run strong, winning the 200 and the fastest split of the day for an EOU athlete on the 4 x 400.
The highlight of the meet however came in the women's pole vault where All American Cayla Weissert put together a big day, easily qualifying for the national meet, dismantling the school record and crushing her PR to jump 12'0!
Next the EOU tracksters will travel to the Saints and Cavilers Invite at Mt. Hood Community College on the 25th of April.
