CCC Players of the Week Named in Track, Softball, Baseball
The following Cascade Collegiate Conference student-athletes have been named Players of the Week for the period April 20-26:
Male Track Athlete of the Week
College of Idaho’s Terriel Thomas, a freshman from Chicago, Ill., met the NAIA ‘B’ qualifying standard in the 400 intermediate hurdles in winning his race at the Northwest Nazarene University Invitational. Thomas clocked a school-record time of 55.02. He also clocked a time of 15.33 in finishing second in the 110 high hurdles.
Male Field Athlete of the Week
Concordia’s Tim Wyland, a freshman from Umatilla, Ore., recorded another huge personal record in the javelin to score an NAIA provisional qualifying mark. With a throw of 187-3, Wyland missed out on an ‘A’ qualifier by just three feet. Wyland opened the year with a throw of 156-7 and has since added more than 30 feet to his personal best.
Female Track Athlete of the Week
College of Idaho’s Maggie Miller, a sophomore from Anchorage, Alaska, met the NAIA automatic qualifying standard in the 800 meters as she set a school record with a time of 2:14.97 at the Northwest Nazarene University Invitational.
Female Field Athlete of the Week
Concordia’s Annie Hess, a senior from Bickelton, Wash., opened her 2009 season with a win in the discus at the Oregon Relays, and her mark of 165-11 instantly put her on the top of the 2009 CCC and NAIA performance charts. Her win came against a host of NCAA Division I competitors.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
College of Idaho’s Jody Zillner, a 5-10 junior from Emmett, Idaho, went 4-0 during week to help the league-leading Yotes extend their win streak to eight consecutive games. In 28 innings, she allowed 20 hits, walked seven and struck out 35. Her 17 wins on the season equals the school record.
Softball Player of the Week
College of Idaho’s Stacy Smith, a 5-9 senior from Draper, Utah, hit safely in all six games for the Yotes as they swept Eastern Oregon, Corban and Concordia in doubleheaders. Smith batted .615, and recorded her 99th career RBI in a win over Corban.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Concordia’s Ben Rue, a 6-4 senior from Silverton, Ore., pitched a nine-inning complete-game shutout against No. 6-ranked Lewis-Clark State. Rue held the defending NAIA champions to five hits while striking out five. It was Rue’s eighth complete game in 11 starts this season.
Baseball Player of the Week
Oregon Tech’s Ryson Mauricio, a 5-9 junior second baseman from Mililani, Hawaii, set OIT single-season records for homers (14), doubles (21), hits (77) and RBI’s (65) as the Owls’ went 3-1 vs. Patten. Mauricio was 10 of 17 at the plate, with six doubles, one homer and eight RBI’s. He is batting a team-high .365.
