Power Fuels Raiders to Sweep of Owls
ASHLAND, ORE. - The Southern Oregon softball team hit three home runs in the opener and went on to sweep Oregon Tech 12-8, 5-3 today at University Field.
The victory improves Southern Oregon to 19-14 overall and more importantly 15-5 overall. The Raiders remain in second place in the Cascade Conference standings, just two games back of College of Idaho. The two teams meet Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Ashland.
Oregon Tech dropped to 19-18 overall and 9-11 in conference play.
The Raiders used home runs in the opener to jump out to an early lead.
After a Kathryn Moy one-out single in the second, Bailey Price unloaded a home run deep over the wall in left to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Following singles by Justine Fulton and Joelle Riekeman, senior Strohm Fouty cleared the bases with a three-run inside-the-park home run to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead after two innings.
After the Owls put three on the board in the top of the third, Fulton helped the Raiders respond with a two-run shot over the wall in left and the Raiders were able to hold on for a 12-8 victory, despite three errors in the late innings that kept Oregon Tech alive.
Freshman Jordyn Kurtz and Moy both had three hits for the Raiders. Fouty, Fulton and Meghan Laughlin all had two hits for SOU.
Kayde Schaefer had two hits and two RBI for the Owls.
In the second game, SOU scored three in the second inning three hits and an OIT error. In the third inning, Moy hit her second double of the game and Danielle Stratton scored her with a single to make it 4-0 and the Raiders went on to the important sweep.
Moy and Fouty both had three hits to lead the Raiders.
Kurtz picked up the victories in both games to improve to 18-13 on the year.
