BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Shayna Prause (heptathlon) and Jason Waltman (decathlon) finished fourth in the Western Washington University Multi Events meet which concluded today in Civic Stadium.

Prause scored 3,748 points behind three NCAA Division II competitors from WWU and Central Washington. Her winning javelin throw of 39.31 puts her past the "B" standard in the event and places her 16th in the NAIA. Prause's score gives her the second best score in the heptathlon this season in the Cascade Conference, just 105 points out of the top spot and ranks her 7th in the NAIA.

Teammate Katie Campbell took sixth with her 3,401 point total for the seven events consisting of the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m dash, long jump, javelin and the 800m run. Campbell's score gives her the third highest score in the CCC heptathlon this spring. Campbell took second in the javelin with her throw of 37.00m.

Jason Waltman, taking part in his first collegiate decathlon, scored 5,139 points, took first place in the shot put (12.23m), and finished second in the 400m (54.78) as he was edged out by Alex Harrison by a mere .56 seconds. His score puts him in 4th place in the CCC decathlon so far this season. He pulled away from the field in the 1500m with his time of 4:50.51, winning the event by over 12 seconds. Waltman also took second (16.88) in the 110 hurdles as Tim Clendaniel of WWU edged him out by just .12 seconds. The decathlon event includes the 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m dash, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin throw and the 1500m run.

"All three of our athletes competing did a great job," stated head coach Preston Brashers. "In addition to getting the "B" standard in the javelin, Shayna looks to have a good chance at qualifying for nationals in the heptathlon this year if she can improve in a few areas. Katie isn't far behind, and definitely has a chance at scoring very good points in the conference meet, and maybe even getting into the national meet," Brashers continued. "Jason has only been working out with the track team for a bit over a month since the basketball season ended. For him to do as well as he did in some events he had never done in competition until this week says a lot about his athleticism and his potential," Coach Brashers concluded.
