LA GRANDE, Ore. - For student-athletes at the collegiate level, life is often times a balancing act. These young adults have to juggle their studies along with workouts, practices, film sessions and numerous other things that can, at times, be overwhelming.

However, last week several Eastern Oregon University student-athletes found time to volunteer at the Union County Safe Kids Fun Fair held at the Blue Mountain Conference Center.

Members of the EOU women's basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball and football teams took time out of there hectic schedules to dress up and greet Union County elementary children in grades K - 3rd as they arrived for the fair.

6-10 year old kids received warm greetings from Mountaineers dressed as McGruff the Crime Dog, Smokey the Bear, Sparky the Fire Dog and the Crash Dummies.

EOU volleyball player Haley McEnroe considered the job well worth the time. "It is always great to be involved in the community." The sophomore from Baker City went on to say, "It was a wonderful and rewarding experience spending time with the kids at the safety fair."

Eastern Oregon University Athletic Director Rob Cashell had this to add about the service Mountaineer athletes provide in the community, "I am very proud of our athletes and coaches. The people in our department and on our campus have made it a point to reach out and build connections with La Grande and all of Eastern Oregon."
