RAPID CITY, S.D. –The Concordia women’s golf team moved up two spots in the second round of competition at the NAIA Championships to hold at ninth place at the midway point of the four-round event held at Meadowbrook Golf Course on Wednesday.
With the top 12 teams averaging more than 22 strokes higher in the second round than in the opener, Concordia posted a 41-over 329 in the second round, just three strokes off their combined total on Monday. With two rounds to play, Concordia (326-329—655) went from a tie for 12th into sole possession of ninth place in the team standings.
The Cavaliers will open the third day of action one stroke behind Lewis-Clark State (319-335—654) and CSU San Marcos (321-333—654), who ended the day tied for seventh place.
Posting the best round of the day by nine strokes, Oklahoma City (302-311—613), the four-time defending NAIA champions, took over the team lead. British Columbia (302-328—630), 17 strokes back of the lead, remained in second place while first-day leader California Baptist (297-337—634) dropped to fourth after taking 40 additional strokes in the second round.
Firing a 2-under 34 on the back nine, Lindsay Aho (83-77—160) catapulted 56 spots to a tie for 22nd with a 5-over 77 on the day. The freshman duo of Holly Speer and Sara Taylor came in tied 55th place. Speer (84-82—166) carded a 10-over 82 to improve by two strokes and move up 31 spots on the leaderboard while Taylor (81-85—166) moved up one spot. Kim Tilton (85-85—170) moved up 18 spots with her second consecutive 13-over 85.
Kim Lindow (78-90—168), the CU leader in the first round, recovered from a 14-over during the first nine holes with a 4-over in the final stretch for an 18-over 90, dropping to 68th place. All five Cavalier golfers ended the second day within 10 strokes of each other.
California Baptist’s Adriana Niclotti (71-78—159) remained the tournament leader, but Oklahoma City’s Sydney Cox crept to within a single stroke with a 1-over 73.
